I’ve been avoiding the topic of samples for a long time. For me, synthesizers were the main actors. Of course, I made tracks using percussion loops. Of course, I use individual samples for drums. But the idea of a track being built around a musical phrase taken from a sample pack… I couldn’t say I hadn’t done it before. But then it was more of a learning project. Heavy Rain is my first serious experience in the melodic techno genre.

As I mentioned earlier, I usually use synthesizers. At the same time, I collect samples. It has accumulated hundreds of gigabytes of samples, most of which I haven’t even heard once. And my collection has been replenished with another sample pack. The new pack was waiting for the same fate: although I listened to it, I wasn’t planning to make a track. But this was a pack from my favorite sound designers from Riemann.
That’s when the idea came up to make a track that would be built around samples from Riemann. The track Heavy Rain was born. This is a track in my favorite genre, Melodic Techno. I took the bass, chords, and a ready-made musical phrase from the pack. I tweaked them a bit, added synthesizers playing arpeggios and the main melody.
The title of the track, Heavy Rain, is a reference to a computer game. But not Heavy Rain, but Beyond Two Souls. Don’t ask how it happened. The mood for the music was inspired by one game, and the title stuck from another. Ha! But I haven’t played either of these games! I’m a big fan of watching games on YouTube.
